New exhibition at Lautrach Castle: ‘Elemental Works - Paintings made of rust and copper oxide’ by Tony Reason
From 1 May 2025, Schloss Lautrach invites art lovers and culture enthusiasts to discover the fascinating exhibition ‘Elemental Works’ with works by British artist Tony Reason.
In the historic rooms of the castle, Tony Reason presents current works that are created through the use of metal oxides and an elaborate oxidation process. Through the targeted specification of shapes and patterns, he channels the natural dynamics of rust and copper oxide into organised structures and relief-like surfaces. This results in abstract landscapes and surprising colour effects - snapshots of a creative transformation in which time itself becomes a creative medium.
The exhibition invites visitors to embark on a journey through the special aesthetics of transience and transformation. Tony Reason's works are characterised by creative discipline and experimental openness - they show how beauty lies in the unforeseen.
Tony Reason, born in Hastings, England in 1956, has lived and worked in the Allgäu region since 2001. His works have already been exhibited in renowned galleries and art houses in Germany and abroad and are represented in numerous collections.
The exhibition is open daily from 1 May to 13 September 2025 from 9 am to 8 pm. Visits are possible at weekends by prior arrangement. All exhibited artworks are available for purchase.
This exhibition at Lautrach Castle promises an inspiring encounter with contemporary art and invites you to experience the creative diversity of Tony Reason's works.
Lautrach Castle is not only a conference hotel steeped in history, but also a lively cultural venue that regularly presents changing exhibitions by renowned artists. The combination of art and historical ambience makes every visit a special experience.

Historical flair in a modern guise: the transformation of
Schloss Lautrach
In the heart of the Allgäu region stands Schloss Lautrach – a place steeped in centuries of history, with an eye towards the future.
In October 2024, the castle reached a new milestone: the renovation of 17 attic rooms was completed, symbolizing a powerful blend of tradition and innovation. This renovation brings fresh energy to historic rooms that have been in use since 1993. After more than three decades, these rooms have undergone a comprehensive redesign that honors their history while meeting the demands of the present.
Expertise with a Local Touch
The project was realized in partnership with the renowned firm Appia, a leading expert in hotel construction, and was executed in close collaboration with local artisans and service providers. This cooperation underscores the deep-rooted connection of Schloss Lautrach with the regional economy and its significance as a cultural landmark in the area.
Back to the Castle: The Heart of the Renovation
The centerpiece of the renovation is the “Back to the Castle” design concept, which places the historic character of the building at the forefront. The new rooms are designed to give guests the feeling of staying in a true castle – a residence that exudes both history and elegance. The rooms skillfully combine historical elements with modern comfort. Lovingly restored wooden beams, adorning the ceilings since the castle's construction in 1781, meet modern bathrooms and tasteful furnishings. The modernization includes classic herringbone floors, fine wall paneling, quilted headboards, and golden accents – all of which enhance the unique castle atmosphere and elevate the historical ambiance.
Resting Under the Same Wooden Beams as Albert Einstein
Guests today can still experience Schloss Lautrach's fascinating history, thanks to historical texts rediscovered in the attic and centuries-old guest books. Among them are handwritten notes from Albert Einstein and other prominent personalities from the 1920s who once found refuge at the castle. These finds highlight that the newly renovated rooms are more than just places to stay; they are a living part of history, connecting guests with the great thinkers and creatives who once found inspiration here. It’s a special experience to sleep under the same beams that once sheltered figures like Einstein.
The Future of Schloss Lautrach: A Living Legacy
Hotel manager Dominik Schmid is visibly proud of the newly renovated rooms: "With this redesign, we’re not only setting new standards of comfort, but also creating a unique connection between past and present for our guests. Schloss Lautrach will continue to be a place where history remains alive while also meeting modern expectations.” To avoid interrupting hotel operations, the work was divided into two construction phases. The first phase was completed in July, while the second phase concluded at the end of October 2024. The attic rooms offer guests the unique opportunity to stay in a historic setting that simultaneously meets today’s standards.

Hotel Schloss Lautrach informs: Scaffolding erected for elevator renovation
Hotel Schloss Lautrach would like to inform its valued guests that scaffolding is currently being erected in front of the facade of the building. This is in preparation for the renovation of the elevator and the extension of the elevator shaft.
The erection of the scaffolding tower marks the start of an important step in the modernization of our elevator system. By renewing and extending the elevator shaft, it will be possible in future for the elevator to travel directly from the first floor to the top floor. This not only represents a considerable gain in comfort for our guests, especially for people with limited mobility or a lot of luggage, but also significantly improves the accessibility and user-friendliness of our hotel.
While the scaffolding is in place, access to the castle is only possible via the south side.
Due to the renovation, our passenger elevator will be out of service from 25.03.2024 until probably 31.05.2024. Unfortunately, accessibility is not guaranteed during this period. Should you require further information or assistance, our reception team will be happy to help you with any inquiries.
We would like to reassure our guests that all necessary measures are being taken during these renovations to ensure a smooth process and minimal impact on your stay. Your safety and satisfaction is our top priority.
We thank you for your understanding and look forward to welcoming you soon to the modernized Hotel Schloss Lautrach.

The visit began with a warm welcome from Appia, followed by a presentation of the renovation project, which included floor plans and renderings of the rooms. In the afternoon, the guests were introduced to the future design of the rooms using the latest VR technology and 3D presentations. The opportunity to experience a virtual tour of the future rooms now was particularly impressive.
During the subsequent selection of materials, the representatives of Schloss Lautrach were able to actively participate in the design process and choose the final materials for the new rooms. From colors to floors and tiles, they were able to contribute their ideas. Finally, they were given an exclusive tour of Appia's production facilities and the opportunity to view finished sample rooms.
"Thanks to Appia, we have a strong partner at our side with decades of experience in hotel construction and interior design and a reputation for creative hotel design," emphasized Dominik Schmid, Hotel Manager of Schloss Lautrach.

Schloss Lautrach inspires pupils with practice-oriented educational program
Schloss Lautrach opened its doors to a special group of Year 7A pupils from the partner school in Legau. Under the direction of instructor Anna-Maria Fackler, trainee Elena Bärtle and intern Franziska Schmid, an inviting seminar was prepared that welcomed the students with a wealth of colorful surprises and delicious treats.
During a guided tour, the students were given a fascinating insight into the history and the wide range of services offered by the historic castle and today's 4-star hotel. Afterwards, Ms. Bärtle and Ms. Schmid provided information about the managers at Schloss Lautrach as well as the training opportunities at the hotel and the associated vocational school. The students showed great interest and asked numerous questions.
The students gained a small insight into the demanding work in a 4-star hotel through a practical etiquette seminar organized at Schloss Lautrach. This encouraged the young people to rethink etiquette rules for greetings and table behavior. In a vivid presentation, Ms. Bärtle and Ms. Schmid explained the ideal procedure from welcoming the guest to escorting them to the table.
Finally, a practical exercise led to the correct handling of cutlery and glasses, which was also attended by the hotel manager Dominik Schmid. The students had the opportunity to put what they had learned into practice.
The day ended with a summary of the knowledge gained and a group photo. The team at Schloss Lautrach is grateful to be able to pass on its knowledge to interested students and hopes that such measures will attract new trainees who would like to continue the legacy of the castle's excellent training tradition.
Interested applicants for the apprenticeships in 2025 are very welcome.

Hotel Schloss Lautrach presents its digital guest brochure
Hotel Schloss Lautrach continues its digitalization strategy and is pleased to announce the launch of its new digital guest portfolio. As the latest innovation in Schloss Lautrach's digital transformation, the guest folder represents a significant step towards offering its guests a more comfortable and sustainable stay.
The digital guest folder replaces the traditional physical guest folder in the rooms and allows guests to contact Schloss Lautrach at any time and from anywhere. Using the digital guest folder is as simple as can be: guests simply need their own terminal device and scan the QR code, which they receive shortly after booking but can also find in their room. This gives them access to a wealth of information about the hotel, its offerings and the surrounding area. Whether they are in the hotel or outside, the digital guest folder offers, at any time, the information they need and useful functions.
"The digital guest folder offers a variety of functions that enrich our guests' stay. They can use the chat function to communicate directly with our reception desk and clarify their concerns. They can view information on attractions in the region or call up routes to nearby restaurants and gas stations, etc. The guest folder thus becomes an indispensable companion for our guests, providing them with a wealth of useful information directly to their own terminal device," says marketing manager Ms. Laura Kazek.
Hygiene and sustainability are also important aspects of this innovation. "Our guests can now enjoy the usual depth of information in our guest folder without having to pick up physical materials," emphas Mr. Dominik Schmid, the hotel manager. "This not only contributes to hygiene, but is also an ecological contribution by eliminating paper.
" With the introduction of the digital guest folder, Schloss Lautrach strengthens its position as a modern and service-oriented hotel that focuses on the needs and expectations of its guests.
