The Ottobeuren monastery is the largest baroque monastery complex in Germany and looks back on more than 1250 years of eventful history. The abbey was once one of the most important monastic complexes in Europe and served as the political and spiritual center of the region. Known as the "Swabian Escorial", it is located in the picturesque spa town of Ottobeuren in Upper Swabia and is a true architectural masterpiece.
The magnificent basilica with its intricate stucco work, golden decorations and impressive dome leaves awe-inspiring impressions on its visitors. The abbey also houses one of the largest organs in Germany, which is regularly played at concerts.
In the monastery museum, visitors have the opportunity to explore part of the baroque monastery building. The museum is located in the former representative rooms of the imperial abbot and in the rooms of the baroque picture gallery, some of which are now used as a state gallery.
In addition to the basilica, the magnificent monastery library can also be visited, which fascinates every visitor with its precious medieval manuscripts, numerous incunabula and around 15,000 books bound in pigskin.
